Ballads Of The Sierra

About the Author . . .

Seems like a lot of folks were headin' West after World War II. Rick Richardson came with them from New Jersey. After spinnin' from Arizona to Alaska getting a feel of the trades, he settled on California. Settled down to carpentry and writing of the working stiffs whenever they cross-trailed with the Sierra and the Mother Lode. He found that every hump and holler up there had a story worth the listenin'.

Rick claims his first tale was prompted by a boast that he would bring immortality to his fellow worker. . . Even claimed one Charlie Cherry-pit planted more trees in America than did the popular Johnny Appleseed - just didn't have press agent to sing his praise. Well, Rick wasn't going to let that happen to his pal - let his work go unnoticed - so he took his pen in hand and let 'r fly. Three months later he had penned The Ballad of John Gomes, and from then on there was no threat, yawn, or plea for authenticity that could still that pen.

Sierra Balladier

The author has assigned his tales to memory and recites them various Sierra celebrations as well as at the flicker of a campfire. As with poetry of any Age, these ballads were designed to be read aloud, with some attention given to the sound and rhythm of the phrase.
